About
A classic North Cascades hike that winds through mossy forest, boardwalks, and waterfalls before opening to a glacially fed alpine lake tucked beneath steep, dramatic cliffs.
Why it’s great
This hike is magical IMHO. It feels like a full immersion into the PNW. Lush, mossy forest, old growth trees, constant water sounds, and sections of boardwalk that make it feel enchanted.
And then there is Lake 22 herself. A quiet alpine lake framed by rugged peaks, often with lingering snowfields into early summer. It’s a great “step up” hike that still feels very accessible thanks to the well-maintained trail (Thanks, WTA!).
Good to know
Requires a NW Forest Pass. (Or, you can buy/print a day pass)
This trail is extremely popular and parking fills early. Weekdays or early mornings are your best bet.
Snow and ice can linger well into late spring/early summer, which can make the final section more challenging than expected. Trekking poles or traction devices can be helpful depending on conditions (check ahead!)
